New Doctoral School for Salford

Professor Karl Dayson

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Salford has a new Doctoral School.

The establishment of a Doctoral School is a key component of Salford’s research strategy, supporting sustainable growth in PGR recruitment and timely completions. The Doctoral School will offer a virtual platform and a base from which to deliver our new vision for postgraduate research. This resource complements discipline-specific provision in academic Schools, connecting students with a whole-institution approach to training and support, focused on wellbeing and successful outcomes.

Now that the right structures are in place, the Doctoral School will work to:

  • Offer a clear profile and status for doctoral candidates, contributing to more effective marketing and recruitment; a unified platform to celebrate our research
  • Provide a central hub of information and guidance for postgraduate students, academic and professional services staff; driving the development of the University’s PGR and Research processes and data management systems
  • Facilitate a single sense of identity and better integration into the wider research community beyond individual research groups, which will in turn encourage cross-disciplinary networking, new research collaborations and interdisciplinary working.

Colleagues may already have noticed the refreshed training available to students and supervisors, as well as a suite of innovative wellbeing activities, including a Doctoral School choir. Ursula Hurley, Director of the Doctoral School, said: “this is a great opportunity to support and celebrate our diverse PGR community. We are working closely with our postgraduate researchers to develop a world-class offer, which equips them to address global challenges.”

PhD candidate Katrin Kugler, student representative and member of the Doctoral School steering group, said: "With all that is happening at the moment - setting up a choir, social events, and focusing on well-being - I can already see how good the Doctoral School will be."

The Doctoral School will launch externally during Salford’s Annual Postgraduate Research Conference, as part of our Festival of Research in July 2019. For more information, or to get involved, please contact Ursula Hurley: u.k.hurley@salford.ac.uk /  ‎@SalfordPGRs  / http://pg.salford.ac.uk/.

We want to attract as many colleagues and PhD students as possible to our launch event on Thursday 4 July at Media City, which is the culmination of this year’s SPARC conference (http://pg.salford.ac.uk/sparc_conference).
