Students from the University of Salford and Manchester-based Futureworks School of Media have joined forces to produce a unique set of training films on the highly acclaimed Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy. This coincides with the publication of the first practical manual on the therapy, drawing on forty years of research, teaching, and practice.

Filmed within Media-City-based Futureworks Studios, Lecturer and Filmmaker ChristinePyke and ex-Futureworks students, Oliver Bates (VFX), Rico Bam (Film and TV Diploma), and Wesley Roskell (sound design), built a set and technical spec based on the HBO series In Treatment, to keep production levels high.

Working therapists, professional actors, and University of Salford 3rd year Media and Performance students, Nathan Ousby and Oliver Hill, fulfilled the roles of clients and therapists in the five films, which are comprised of an introductory film, demonstrating the three main stages of the Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy conversational model, and a further four in-depth films, exploring loss, shame, anxiety and the body.

UoS MA Production graduate, James Murphy assisted the Director of Photography, Rico Bam, who works on documentary and drama productions for Netflix.

The films, which will be launched at Futureworks Studios on 27 February from 6:15pm-7:15pm, will be accompanied by gin tasting, provided by David Rigby Master Distiller of Three Rivers Gin, and nibbles courtesy of Chef Brian Mellor.

Producer and Director Christine Pyke said, “I am delighted with what we have achieved with this project. We had to get to grips with quite complicated terminology and hypotheses whilst remaining faithful to the nuances of the model. The ‘conversational’ aspect had resonance with documentary filmmaking, which is my background, and this helped smooth the process.”

She adds, “The effort and professionalism of all the students and ex-students involved in this project has been outstanding, and I sincerely hope this experience, which they can add to their showreels and portfolios, will help them in their future careers.”
