We’re delighted to share news of our latest ICZ initiative, Launch @SalfordUni business incubator. Launch has started its life as a joint project between Student Experience & Support and Salford Business School and opened its doors on 18 September 2018, after a £60,000 refurbishment of the vacated Salford Business School office space in the Maxwell Building.

As you may have noticed, there have been significant structural changes to old office space on the third floor of Maxwell and now it also has a new function: to support student and graduate entrepreneurship. The space will become a hot-desking facility for our entrepreneurs, training space as well as an extension of the Careers & Enterprise team's office.

Over the last year, a team of colleagues from the Careers & Enterprise Team within Student Experience and Support and Salford Business School, have worked together to create Launch @SalfordUni and to select entrepreneurs that will take part in this 6 month incubation programme. Justyna Turner, John Davies, and Ali Nowroozi worked with students across all disciplines and chose the top 21 entrepreneurs out of 60 applicants, to join our new incubator as the first ever cohort.

The Launch delivery team is made up of 15 highly experienced individuals, which include colleagues from the Salford Business School, 6 colleagues from our external partners, GC Business Growth Hub and 3 high profile entrepreneurs: Vikas Shah MBE, Naomi Timperley and Ali Nowroozi. The facility and support programme is managed by Justyna Turner, Incubation Manager from the Careers & Enterprise Team and supported by the wider team. They are also supported by an Advisory Board which includes colleagues from across the University and our partner organisations: GC Business Growth Hub, Santander Universities UK, The Landing, Avakino, Swiscot and Islington Mill.

The Launch @SalfordUni incubator will deliver a series of benefits and training for our entrepreneurs:

·         Core business skills training programme, Spark2Scale delivered by our colleagues from the GC Business Growth Hub.

·         Digital Drop in delivered by Richard Dron

·         Law Drop in delivered by Ian King

·         Finance drop in delivered by Dr Mohammad Al Bahloul

·         Inspirational Enterprise Stories sessions delivered by Vikas Shah MBE, Ali Nowroozi & Naomi Timperley

·         Access to grant funding available through the University and Santander Universities UK

·         Mentoring and advice delivered by the Enterprise team

·         Networking opportunities with the local business community

“Through this project, we are not only positively impacting the employability of our students, by supporting them to create their own careers but also working collaboratively with industry partners to deliver the programme ensuring industry insight is at heart of our activities,” says Incubation Manager Justyna Turner. “Over the first year, we aim to run two cohorts and support 40 entrepreneurs to start their business and deliver enterprise skills training to over 200 aspiring entrepreneurs through the facility.”

Justyna will be hosting a series of Launch Open Afternoons for colleagues wanting to find out more and see the space. No need to book in advance – simply turn up at the one that suits you for a chat and a coffee.
