Top awards for rheumatology experts

Congratulations to Professor Alison Hammond, Chief Investigavor and Dr Yeliz Prior, trial manager who have won the Health Professional Best Abstract award for their research: "The effects of arthritis gloves on hand pain in people with inflammatory or rheumatoid arthritis : a randomised controlled trial ( A-GLOVES trial). " The trial was funded by the National Institute of Health Research and involved over 200 patients at 16 hospitals around the UK.

Alison and Yeliz from the School of Health Sciences received the award at the European League against Rheumatism conference in Amsterdam which is the largest rheumatology conference int he world, attended by 14,000 delegates. Yeliz presented a paper at the conference about the MSK Hub, an innovative digital platform she has developed with research colleagues, patients and health professionals to provide self-assessment and self-management support for people with musculoskeletal conditions. The MSK hub is already attracting considerable attention and is set to extend further in future.

Alison also recently received the Droitwich Lecture Award at the British Society of Rheumatology conference for her contribution to musculoskeletal research and education related to Health Professionals in Rheumatology. One award is made annually to a member of the Society who has made an outstanding contribution, both nationally and internationally in Rheumatology.

Professor Hammond's Droitwich Lecture was entitled “Activities and Participation: the meaning of life.“ The lecture emphasised the importance of enabling people with musculoskeletal conditions to maximise participation and well-being, and discussed evidence for how occupational therapy facilitated this.
