Update about the USS pensions dispute and strike action
Apr 09, 2018
The University and College Union (UCU) have opened a consultative ballot for their members regarding the latest Universities UK (UUK) proposal in relation to the University pensions dispute. The consultative ballot opened on Wednesday 4 April and will close at 2pm on Friday 13 April.
In summary, the consultation exercise by the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) Trustee remains on pause because:
- the local branches of UCU have rejected the nationally negotiated proposal by UCU and UUK to address the deficit within USS;
- a further proposal has been put forward by UUK to establish a joint expert panel to review the scheme valuation process and recommend any contribution or benefits changes necessary to address the funding deficit and effect a recovery plan to the JNC (Joint Negotiating Committee). This is subject to the UCU member consultative ballot.
UCU have indicated that if their members vote ‘yes’ to accept this proposal then it will suspend its current industrial action plans. However, in line with employment legislation requirements, UCU have provided us with formal notice that there will be a further five days of planned strike action beginning Monday 16 April and ending Friday 20 April 2018. The outcome of the ballot may affect this planned action but as a University, we are preparing for the strike action to take place.
The strike action proposed for April will only be taking place at 13 universities.
Any questions in relation to industrial action can be addressed to the dedicated HR mailbox HRIA@salford.ac.uk
