Biomechanics conference held today

Apr 05, 2018

Colleagues from the School of Health Sciences were delighted to host the 2018 Biomechanics Interest Group (BIG) meeting of the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). The event saw around 130 academics, research students and practitioners, with an interest in sport and exercise biomechanics, network and present their research. Delegates attended from all around the UK.

Dr Steve Atkins, Director of Sport, Exercise and Physiotherapy welcomed delegates to the Conference saying

“This is the main gathering of sport and exercise biomechanists in the UK. The University is privileged to welcome such an array of experts to Salford, and the programme reflects the variety, and quality, of biomechanics work being undertaken nationally. The organising committee, led by Dr Paul Jones, have created a truly exceptional event, with expert keynote speakers and podium/poster presenters. In addition, we are also delighted to welcome some of the most notable manufacturers of highest quality testing and analysis equipment and software to display at the event.’’

The packed programme began with a powerful keynote presentation from Dr Paul Barratt, Head of Performance Support who reflected on ten years of biomechanics with the Great Britain Cycling Team. There were also short oral and poster presentations, the latter attracting great interest in the human performance laboratory as the authors were able to answer questions and discuss their research with students and staff from other universities and organisations. The day ended with a keynote from Dr Daniel Fong of Loughborough University, presenting on his world-leading clinical work around the unstable ankle.
