The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an occasion for governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations to raise public awareness of rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence against women. One of the additional aims of the day is to highlight that the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden. In Europe, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15 and every second woman has faced sexual harassment.

The day has been marked annually on November 25 since 2000, historically based on the date of the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic. The event invites you to #orangetheworld to symbolise peace for women and we invite you to help raise awareness by wearing something orange on Wednesday.
