Nationally-acclaimed architect appointed as Visiting Professor
Apr 18, 2017
The School of the Built Environment is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Hodder MBE as Visiting Professor in the School.
Stephen Hodder is the past President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 2013-15 and was awarded an MBE for services to architecture in 1998.
Stephen Hodder was educated at the School of Architecture, University of Manchester where he gained a distinction in the Bachelor of Architecture degree. Following University, he joined Building Design Partnership in 1981 and became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1982.
He has been in practice since 1983 and in 1992 formed Hodder Associates which won the Royal Fine Art Commission/Sunday Times Building of the Year award for Colne Swimming Pool in Lancashire later that year. Shortly afterwards he won a limited competition to extend Arne Jacobsen’s Grade 1 Listed St. Catherine’s College in Oxford. In 1996 Hodder Associates received the most important award in British Architecture for a single building, the inaugural Stirling Prize for Architecture for the Centenary Building on our Adelphi Campus. The Practice has since won over forty major awards.
Professionally, Stephen has been President of the Manchester Society of Architects, RIBA North West Region Chairman and a member of the RIBA Awards committee.
Stephen will be working with the colleagues at the School of the Built Environment to further expand the Master programme (Part 2) and Part 3 of the growing Architecture discipline. He is especially looking forward to working in the studio and contributing to the distinctiveness of architecture education at the University of Salford.
Stephen said: “The current model of architectural education has been with us since the Oxford Conference in 1958 and whilst I was President of the RIBA we approved a five point plan for much needed education reform. What excites me with architecture in the School of the Built Environment is that we have a real opportunity to build on this and think about how we might make positive connections between academia and practice. I would hope to use the profile of my practice and network to facilitate this and wider connections.
I believe we have real potential, building on the School’s international reputation and the University’s genuine commitment to developing exceptional partnerships with industry through the ICZs for SoBE to be an exemplar in collaboration between academia and practice”
Professor Hisham Elkadi said: “I am delighted for the appointment of Stephen Hodder at the University of Salford. Stephen does not only bring a wealth of expertise and practice of architecture but he would further advance our excellent world standing through his international reputation and networks, his demand for excellence, and innovative thinking. We welcome Stephen to our School of architecture and built environment adding to our rich and innovative mix of research, education, and design practices.”
