University Day brings colleagues together in celebration of year-long achievement

Jun 18, 2014

Register now for University Day

Our University community came together for the first ever formal celebration of the excellent achievements of colleagues, students and alumni, yesterday afternoon.

Maxwell Hall was filled with almost 400 colleagues who heard from VC Professor Martin Hall ahead of an awards ceremony which recognised the achievements of our people via the annual prizes of VC Distinguished Teaching Awards, Research Excellence Awards, the Harold Riley Award, an Alumni Achievement Award, Green Impact awards and - for the first time - awards which recognised excellence across Professional Services.

Recently appointed professors also took to the stage with the VC introducing them to all colleagues along with details of their research interests – a great opportunity to acknowledge the talent behind our research activity.

VC Professor Martin Hall said, “The University of Salford is nothing without its people. Everyone has a part to play in making the University of Salford the vibrant, pioneering and, above all, warm and welcoming institution that it is.  Without you, this University would be little more than bricks and mortar.  It is you who bring these buildings to life with your passion, your endless enthusiasm, your dreams, your focus on our students, your curiosity, thirst for knowledge, the need to find answers and a desire to change lives.

“It has been a remarkable, challenging year, and to see so many colleagues and friends doing important and impactful work never ceases to amaze me. Every single individual or group who was nominated for these awards deserves our thanks and acknowledgement.”

A key recognition on the day was the introduction of the first ever Employee of the Year award– an opportunity to recognise one individual who embodies the University’s values. John Barber from Estates & Property Services became the first winner of the award. John said, “I was so surprised to win and I’m very grateful to receive this award.  I’ve worked for the University for 17 years, the last four in the role of Handy Person, and I really appreciate this recognition for my hard work.”

John received the honour because of his helpful, positive and upbeat commitment to delivering excellent customer service. He goes the extra mile for his colleagues and is a great role model with his contribution, on every occasion, being fundamentally aligned to our Strategic Plan and to making our campus a great place for living, learning, researching, working and enjoying leisure time.

Colin McCallum, Executive Director of University Advancement, added, “This is our first University Day in this format. As we develop this over the years we want to find more and more ways of recognising employee achievements alongside the achievements of our alumni and students. The University has a great story to tell – so let’s tell it!

“At this year’s event we were delighted to present David Topham with an Alumni Achievement Award recognising his success as the founder of Manchester-based CTP Properties. We also heard from wonderful Josie Fletcher – an outstanding example of the Salford Advantage. Having grown up in the care system, she is delighted and amazed to now be completing her first year of study for a BA in Accounting and Finance thanks to the award of a Salford Advantage Scholarship. She received a standing ovation from the audience for her moving and honest speech – the first public speech she has ever delivered in such a large auditorium.”
