Ex student pays back lecturers with showers of banknotes
Dec 22, 2009
Alumnus and Punch and Judy 'professor' Barrington Powell made a dazzling return to the University to amaze students and colleagues with his magic tricks.
Playing to two packed audiences in one of the University's studio theatres, Barrington displayed tricks such as making objects vanish and reappear, predicting the lottery numbers and, in a spectacular finale, appeared to produce banknotes out of thin air!
Barrington graduated from Salford 12 years ago with a HND in Media Performance and is back as part of the Performance department's personal development programme, devised by Senior Lecturer Denise Vernon.
The programme hopes to encourage students to think creatively and use the skills they have developed, whilst at Salford, to build interesting, diverse and long-term careers.
She said: "We wanted to show our students there are so many aspects to entertainment and the media. This was one of a series of sessions where we help students prepare for the future. It certainly proved to be one of the most popular."
Barrington is a member of the Magic Circle, a clown and an accomplished public speaker who has performed for Royalty, at 10 Downing Street and at top corporate events. He spoke to students about opportunities in the world of entertainment.
Barrington said: "I owe so much to Salford and the great tutors - and when I heard I could repay them in this way, I jumped at the chance."
