Shock take Silver at Nationals

Jun 12, 2019

We're thrilled to congratulate Shock Radio, the Student Union's radio station, who recently took silver at the National Societies Awards for Best Student Media Society!

Hosted at The Union, MMU, Shock beat media societies including student newspapers, radio stations, and others from across the whole UK. The society have worked diligently over the past year to deliver a range of activities and opportunities for its members from outside broadcasting and live commentating Varsity, the Two Cities Challenge, and a Salford Red Devils match, to covering the Women in Sports Conference for #ThisSalfordGirlCan, to welcoming Greg James to their studios during Welcome and raising over £1000 for charity with overnight rowing challenges and charity club nights.

Shock's treasurer and the union's current Societies & Sports Officer, Megan, said:"I am so immensely proud of Shock Radio...proving to be one of the strongest media societies in the country! During my time at Salford, I have witnessed Shock go from strength to strength in the world of Student Radio, so to see it getting some national recognition is incredible.

Every single member of Shock Radio should be proud of themselves for all their hard work over the past year, from podcasters to producers, team members to techies. You've made Shock Radio the society and the station it is today. Well Done everyone!"

The Union's incumbent sabbatical officer for Science & Technology and 2019/20 President-elect, Evie Adams, added:

"Shock Radio has gone above and beyond the usual expectations of a Students’ Union society. They provide a unique and professional opportunity for all students across the UoS Campus. I take great pride in associating myself with such a society here at Salford, and speaking proudly about the station on a national level. As an officer I see the committee members who organise the society, giving so much time and personal resource to the members and the station.

"They are remarkable students who I know will go onto having huge success in their chosen careers paths. From welcome week, to our end of year events, they are a dedicated society with members forging amazing friendships and support networks, through common interest and morals – no wonder they have so many members.

"The society’s reputation this year has created such a buzz within the student community, kicking of the year with Radio 1s’ Greg James broadcasting live and across the nation from Shock’s studios. The are a credit to the student radio community and to those studying media here at Salford."
