Maker Mondays
Maker Mondays

Are you interested in learning more about 3D printing, laser cutting and electronics? Why not sign up to one of the “Maker Monday” session?

Start the week with a bit of light learning and learn how to make things with our laser cutters and 3D printers. The Maker Space is an open-access workspace available to all colleagues and students across the University, regardless of School or Department, providing training and support on a range of digital fabrication techniques. The Maker Space is now open in its new location in the Newton Building.

Have a look at what's in store this month for Maker Space Mondays:

Monday 8th April 10am - 11am / Wednesday 10th April 2pm -3pm

Tech Intro – Laser scanning

Offering the opportunity to get acquainted with the Laser Scanning Arm in the Morson Engine Room. Capable of digitising objects using both a touch probe and a non-contact laser scanner this equipment is perfect for getting smooth, organic shapes into the computer for further work, inspecting machined parts or transferring fragile and delicate workpieces into the digital realm at high resolution. From there you can work your data more in CAD, or send to a 3D printer.

Sign up on Eventbrite for either Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon for a brief introduction to this highly capable process.

Monday 15th April 10am - 11am / Wednesday 17th April 2pm - 3pm

Tech Intro – Waterjet Cutting

Get up close and personal with the Maker Space's new 5-axis waterjet cutter and learn more about how this incredible technology works.

This machine cuts through tough materials with a narrow jet of extremely high-pressure water (up to 45,000 PSI) with a small amount of abrasive grit mixed in. Using it you can cut a variety of materials, inch thick steel, aluminium sheet, fibreglass, that would otherwise be unsuitable for cutting with a laser cutter, or would be tedious to cut by hand or with traditional machining processes.

Sign up on Eventbrite for either Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon for a brief introduction to waterjet cutting.

Wednesday 24th April 2pm - 3pm

Tech Intro – 3D Printing

Understand how you can make the most of 3D printing by attending this Maker Monday session.  Learn what 3D printing is and how it is used for personal fabrication and industry projects, see a live demo on the machine and get started on your own 3D prints.

Sign up on Eventbrite for either Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon for an introduction to 3D printing.

Monday 29th April 10am - 11am / Wednesday 1st May 2pm - 3pm

Tech Intro – Laser cutting

A laser cutter utilises the harnessed power of light to burn through the material.  At this Maker Monday session, learn about the materials you can can’t cut on our machines, the workflow required and take away parts you have made.  Once you’ve completed this short workshop you will able to use our laser cutter independently by just booking in time with us!  Your skills will be transferable to using our new waterjet cutter as well!

Sign up on Eventbrite for either Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon for an introduction to laser cutting.

If there’s something specific you want to learn more about get in touch with us – makerspace@salford.ac.uk – otherwise you can sign up on Eventbrite with further workshops added regularly.
