It’s not every day you get to attend a world exclusive performance from a multi-award winning playwright. However, we are hoping you'll join us for just that later this month.

On 22 March a ‘script in hand’ early sharing of Jim Cartwright’s production ‘Is There Anybody There’ is coming to the New Adelphi Theatre and our students have been at the heart of this project.

Jim’s highly anticipated physic thriller features a stellar line-up from stage and screen, including Cold Feet star John Thomson, Brookside’s Claire Sweeney, Wendi Peters from Coronation Street and Gregory’s Girl star Gordon John Sinclair, with more cast to be announced soon!

The play is an exploration of mortality and a look into the lives of a group of northern women struggling to get by on zero hours contracts. The protagonists are a group of cleaning ladies and other staff, who work the late-night shift in a sky scraper in the North of England.

Our students have had the opportunity to get first-hand industry experience working on the production. 2nd year Set Design students have created a provisional set and are excited to see their vision come to life, plus one student will take on the role of Assistant Director, working closely with West End Director Anthony Banks. Music students will be behind the sound design and score, creating  original music for the play.

Jim Cartwright, a longstanding advocate of the University, says he is excited to bring this early reading to our on-campus theatre later this month.

“The University's ethos chimes with my own. Some might say the arts are very elitist in this country and I want to help change that.

“I’ve been really impressed with the quality of work from the students and it’s a pleasure to work with them. It’s great how we’re getting students involved in big projects like this - everyone benefits.”

Niki Woods, Artist Director at the New Adelphi Theatre, said: “Working with Jim this year has led to many exciting opportunities for our students. For instance, Jim has worked with first year Performance students in character developing workshops, as well as an “In conversation with” series alongside household names like Jane Horrocks, Denise Welsh and Jason Manford.

“Is There Anybody There? is yet another great opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience of how projects come together as well as collaborating with staff, other students and professional actors, writers, directors from within the creative industries. In what promises to be a fantastic evening, I’d encourage as many staff and students as possible to come down to the ‘script-in-hand’ performance later this month.”

The performance starts at 7.30pm. Staff and students can get exclusive half price tickets when they use the code newwriting on the booking page (just £5 instead of £10). Please note this will be a ‘script in hand’ performance and John Thomson will not be performing on the night, Jim Cartwright will read in.
