New Adelphi Theatre kicks off season with first UK screening of Strangeways Here We Come
Oct 03, 2018
The New Adelphi Theatre kicked off its first programmed season in style on Wednesday when they organised special preview screenings of Strangeways Here We Come ahead of its national release later this week. The dark comedy starring Michelle Keegan (Our Girl, Coronation Street), Salford alumnus Stephen Lord (Marcella, Penny Dreadful) Elaine Cassidy (No Offence) and BAFTA winner Chanel Cresswell (This Is England), tells the tale of a group of Salfordian high-rise residents who conspire to get their revenge on a loan shark.
The matinee and evening showings were followed by a special Q&A with the cast. “It’s great that we’ve had the first screening here in Salford and in this amazing theatre too,” said actor Stephen Lord who, since graduating from Salford 20 years ago, has been in shows such Eastenders, Phone Shop, Penny Dreadful, Marcella and Shameless. “We’ve had some great support from the University and I’m pleased that so many students have had the opportunity to watch the film before release.”
Director Chris Green added: “The movie was actually filmed around this area, in Pendleton and the Salford Precinct for example. There are so many colourful characters in Salford and we really wanted this to come across in the film.”

The screenings were met with applause from the audience and no shortage of praise for both the cast and film’s narrative. Stephen’s past tutor Denise Vernon even sat in the stalls to watch her ex-student on the big screen! She said: "Stephen was a remarkable student who was focused from a young age - he had attracted an agent while on the course at Salford and inspired fellow students to do the same. On the stage, screen and on the page he brought an honesty, energy and sense of humour that directly engaged audiences. Great to see him back in Salford still inspiring...."
Earlier in the week Granada Reports also popped down to the theatre to interview Stephen and Elaine for a special segment which you can watch here. The previews marked the start of public events at the 350-seat theatre featuring everything from side-splitting comedy to ground breaking dance projects.
