ICZ month: Supporting art through private partnerships
Sep 13, 2017
The University’s Art Collection Team have developed a unique 12 month Graduate Scholarship Programme for students from the School of Arts & Media for the first year after graduation.
In association with Castlefield Gallery and working with a number of partners across Greater Manchester, including Hot Bed Press, Islington Mill, Paradise Works and Redeye Photography Network, the programme gives graduates the chance to develop their skills and professional experience.
Each award is bespoke, but the benefits include:
- Up to £1000 cash award towards professional development (for example research, travel, and training) or production/material costs
- Studio space
- Mentor support & guidance from more established artists and arts professionals
- CPD development sessions
Now in its fourth year, there are a number of success stories from past scholars, including Joe Beedles, who graduated in 2015. He said: “It (the programme) has allowed me an amazing opportunity that has not only provided me with a professional foothold into the art-world, forming my artistic direction and output, establishing networks and making friends around the world, but also a thoroughly positive life-changing experience.”
Next month Joe will be undertake an artist’s residency at 501 Artspace in Chongqing, China, organised by the Centre of Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA), Manchester.
Earlier this year fellow 2015 scholar, Amy Stephenson curated an exhibition, WANDERLUST, at The International 3 gallery inspired by and featuring the works from the Art Collection. 2014 Graduate Scholar Lizzie King has work on display in the What’s in Store? exhibition, alongside work by current Scholar Claudia Alonso.
Works from former graduate scholars will be displayed at The Manchester Contemporary art fair (27 – 29 October) selected by independent curator Kwong Lee.
The work of the Art Collection Team is broad and far reaching. The What’s in Store? exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery highlights a wide range of industry partnerships.
