School of Computing, Science and Engineering receives its own Bronze Athena SWAN award

The School of Computing, Science and Engineering has just received a Bronze Athena SWAN award for its commitment to the career progression and retention of female staff in the School.
The award comes after we received a University-wide Bronze Athena SWAN award back in April 2016. The awards go to institutions that seek to address unequal gender representation across academic disciplines, professional and support functions and who remove the obstacles faced by women.The School-level applications involve much more detailed analysis of the School’s students data including UG & PG admissions (applications, offers, acceptances), degree attainment, employability and school’s staff data (appointments, promotions, research profile, career development, career breaks), as well as policies and practices. Based on the analysis of students and staff data, a detailed four-year action plan was composed to ensure the continuation of good practice.
The application was led by Associate Dean of Engagement Professor Haifa Takruri MBE, who recently received an outstanding achievement award for her work in engineering. Haifa said: “I am so delighted that we achieved the Bronze award which means that we are on the right track when it comes to gender equality. I thank all colleagues who contributed to making this happen. I will be ensuring that our action plan is fulfilled in preparation for a Silver award in the near future.”
Professor Sunil Vadera, Dean of the School of Computing, Science & Engineering, said: “Receiving the Athena SWAN Bronze award is a great achievement for the School. We strive for gender equality in all areas of work so it’s great to be recognised for our efforts. I’d like to thank all of the team who helped to make this happen, and in particular Haifa who submitted the award application and works tirelessly to promote the participation of women in science, engineering and technology education.”
Professor Abigail Gregory, Associate Dean Internationalisation and Director of Athena SWAN said: "I am delighted that the School has been successful in its application. This reflects the huge amount of work carried out by Haifa and colleagues to identify the areas they want to focus on and the practical actions proposed to address them. The award is a significant step forward in the School’s and University’s Athena SWAN ambitions”.
In recent months we have been continuing to drive gender equality here at Salford under our Athena SWAN objectives; an example of this being the launch of Women’s Voice - the University staff network for women which celebrates and provide a collective voice for female colleagues.
