Oil and gas industry partner teaches engineering students

A leading firm from the Texan oil industry has been equipping students on Petroleum and Gas engineering modules with cutting-edge skills to model pipelines and installations.
Bryan Research and Engineering, from Houston – the home of the US oil industry – are in the business of petroleum and process simulation software and run bespoke training called PROMAX.
The firm spent two days in the School of Computing, Science and Engineering equipping undergraduates and postgraduates with the skills to model pipeline, heat exchangers, valves, distillation columns and more in preparation for their future careers.
The training was developed and co-created between Bryan Research and Engineering and Salford academics, Dr Abubakar Abbas, Dr Godpower Enyi and Professor Ghasem Nasr.
Dr Abbas said: “BR&E chose the University of Salford among the many UK Universities for this training based on our industry-focused curriculum and the huge interest shown by more than 100 students and staffs who wanted to participate.
“This is the first time such training was held in a University setting, as it is designed for industrial customers, however, considering the university ICZ and inclusive teaching principle of the University, we felt it would greatly enhance the experience and learning outcomes of the students.”
Third-year Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering student Ernest Deka said: “The job market is extremely competitive at the moment and everyone is looking to find an extra qualification to be more appealing to employers. That is where the ProMax Training came in handy.
“The one day training gave not only me but the whole group an insight into the use of new software in industry.”
Training of this type can cost up to £100,000 but Dr Abbas and his colleague achieved it free of charge.
The learning outcomes feed into areas including natural gas plant modelling, optimizing natural gas specifications, crude oil refining modelling, and natural pipeline modelling and analysis, and the course was also attended by staff and researchers updating their industry awareness.
The course is the third industry training session offered to students this academic year - 3D Drilling Simulators in Oil and Gas Industry: Opportunities for Teaching, Research and Employability and Oil Field Manager simulation software training.
