On Tuesday 31 January, a number of our students and staff attended the first Float Like a Butterfly Social Coach Leadership Programme seminar at the University, delivered in collaboration between the Youth Charter and the Muhammad Ali Centre. In attendance to represent the Youth Charter was Geoff Thompson, the lead on the University's Sport ICZ and Erin Herbert, Director of Programming from the Muhammad Ali Centre, Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

The seminar session acted as a unique opportunity to set out the qualities of leadership within Muhammad Ali’s core principles of confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect and spirituality. The application of these principles is vital to the programme’s potential for social and community empowerment, using sport, arts, culture and digital, as devices to help achieve these goals.

From the feedback, the interactive session was a very rewarding one, with many attendees displaying a real knowledge and passion for the subjects discussed and displaying the qualities the social coach programme seeks within its leaders.

A great example of our ICZ strategy in action, once selected and accredited, the 50-100 newly trained social coaches will engage with 50 schools across Salford in weekly two-hour visits. This will lead up to festival event at Media City in the summer.

“The Float Like A Butterfly Social Coach Leadership Programme is at the very heart of the University’s 50th anniversary year and it is an opportunity for students and staff to engage, equip and empower the young people of Salford in a truly extraordinary legacy opportunity for all from one of the greatest Olympians and humanitarians of all time,” says Geoff Thompson MBE FRSA DL.
