Dr Mike Wood from the School of Environment & Life Sciences, was invited to Chair a UK Government consultation on the implementation of a new European Directive into UK legislation.

The Basic Safety Standards Directive (BSSD) sets out the requirements for EC Member States in relation to radiation protection and must be implemented by February 2018.

Mike, an international expert in environmental radiation protection, has chaired two BSSD consultation events in London during November and December. The events brought together stakeholders from industry, regulators and other interest groups alongside Government representatives.

The BSSD is a large and complex legislative instrument, which contains over 100 Articles and 19 technical annexes. The Directives that it replaces are currently implemented in the UK through a range of legislation, enforced by more than 17 different regulators. The implementation of the BSSD therefore represents a significant challenge and effective consultation is essential.

Mike has been congratulated by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for his role in ensuring the consultation events were a great success. The findings from these events are now being used to help BEIS and the Devolved Governments plan the changes and legislative developments that are required.
