Myth: - “Inclusion and diversity is just about ticking boxes” FALSE While tick-boxes are one of the ways of collecting data in institution, inclusion and diversity is about translating that data into information that can inform change. What doesn’t get measured doesn’t get done – inclusion and diversity needs to be measured and monitored – in the same way that finances are monitored through budgets – so that issues are identified and action can be taken.

Myth: - “There is no evidence that good diversity management has an impact on student experience” FALSE How staff are treated at work cannot easily be separated from the quality of service offered to our students. Excellent equality practice makes good business sense. Recruiting people from the widest possible pool leads to different perspectives, improved ‘diversity of thought’ and better problem solving. Retaining staff in a positive, fair and supportive workplace that values them for who they are has been shown to improve student attainment levels.

Myth: - It’s about people getting roles they are not qualified for. FALSE This is a pervasive and damaging myth that feeds into notions and assumptions that all too often have contributed to lack of diversity in the first instance, such as ‘political correctness’ or ‘positive discrimination’ (which, by the way, does not and never has existed in UK law). The UK’s Equality Act does allow organisations to take ‘positive action’ in areas where a lack of visible diversity exists, for example encouraging women into engineering (only 6% of registered UK engineers are female). But Equality, Diversity Inclusion does not and never has ignored skill, knowledge or merit – on the contrary, what it seeks to do is to shine a light on the excellence that can be found in the wider talent pool.
